A note of Anti-satellite weapons.

Back in September 1985, F-15 of the US Air-force launched a vertical ASAT missile at the Solwind P78-1, a U.S. gamma ray spectroscopy satellite. In February 2008, the US Navy destroyed a spy satellite using RIM-161 Standard Missile 3 which is jointly operated by United States Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force. Continue reading

The Doctrine of Basic Structure in India and other nations

India: Doctrine of Basic Structure was recognized for the first time as a concept by the Honorable Supreme Court of India in the Kesavananda Bharati case (1973).

It’s an Indian innovation in which the court declared that Article 368 (the power to amend constitution) did not enable Parliament to alter the basic structure or framework of the Constitution and parliament could not use its amending powers under Article 368 to ‘damage’, ’emasculate’, ‘destroy’, ‘abrogate’, ‘change’ or ‘alter’ the ‘basic structure’ or framework of the constitution. This decision is not just a landmark in the evolution of constitutional law, but a turning point in constitutional history. Continue reading

1) Indian e-commerce market is 1% of retail. Even if Flipkart performs great over the years, it can take at max 30-35% of that 1%. USD 18 (16+2) billion for 0.3% market!? Walmart can do that by investing mere 20%. Continue reading

Welcoming The New Financial Year: A Note On Corrupt Banking Practices

From hawala to cybercrime and from non-performing assets (NPAs) to wilful defaulters, the Indian financial stress and fraud journey seems to be expanding faster than the universe. All talks about individuals and businesses failing to honor loan repayments but not a word spoken about corrupt banking practices. And evil practices not just by bankers or borrowers involved in the transaction but also by valuers, accountants and everyone who inherently become a part of this complex system. Continue reading

Hello Share Market

So after investing a few years in trying to understand how markets work, I finally forayed into the share market today. Investing at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) as well as Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), my miniature startup portfolio predominantly includes shares from the renewable energy sector. Intraday trading doesn’t seem like my cup of tea. Equity delivery is what I am after – buy, hold and sell when the time is right. Suzlon, Orient Green Power, Indowind, Indosolar, Moserbaer, Tata Power and Steel Authority of India are what I have started with. Continue reading

How can we tackle the problem of water scarcity across India?

Water scarcity is a subset of problems associated with climate change and unfortunately, both of them are global man-made disasters. To overcome them, huge investments in infrastructure, as well as institutions, is required.

As serious as it may sound, there still is time to repair the damage done. In my view, the following measures should be adopted with immediate effect – Continue reading

Is installing rooftops with solar a good option in India?

Yes. Saves energy, saves money and is an environmentally cleaner option.

With an average solar insolation of 4-7 kWh/m and 300 sunny days in a year, India’s potential for harnessing solar power is immense. Government of India wants a growing share of the country’s electricity generation to come from renewable energy. Continue reading
